All instructional resources and materials shall support the district's academic standards and educational objectives. As the governing body of the School District, the Board is legally responsible for the selection of, and the processes to select, instructional resources and materials, including: textbooks, programs, required resources and/or supplementary materials.
Definitions:
"Textbooks" and "programs" shall mean the major information resource(s), both digital and bound materials, provided in multiple copies for use by a total class or a major portion of such class.
"Required curriculum resources" shall include print and non-print resources such as software, Web-based products, assigned titles of literature or kits that are integral to a course or curriculum content area and required for whole class student use.
"Supplementary materials" shall mean any instructional materials other than textbooks, programs, and required curriculum materials including, but not limited to, books (literary and nonfiction), periodicals, newspapers, slides and transparencies, models, pictures, diagrams, maps, charts, slides, electronic recordings, and computer applications or electronic subscriptions which relate to the standards and are available for teacher use and/or student selection. Supplementary materials are used to provide extension, enrichment and support to the curriculum (usually by individuals or small groups).
Since the Board is a governing body, it delegates to the Superintendent, or their designatee(s), the responsibility and authority for the selection of instructional resources and materials. The selection shall be in accordance with policy and the identified processes as established by the District's professional personnel (see Policy IG), and in consultation with impacted stakeholders or their representatives, potentially including administration, teachers, students, and parents/guardians.
Final decision on purchase shall rest with the superintendent or designee, based on budget processes or special allocations, subject to adoption by the Board. All instructional resources and materials shall be available for inspection by parents/guardians.
