File:  IHA - Basic Instructional Program

The Board of Education is required by state law to determine the educational programs to be carried on in the schools of the district.  The educational programs shall provide formal studies to meet the general academic needs of all students to enable them to meet or exceed state and district content standards.  To the extent possible, opportunities for individual students to develop specific talents and interests in more specialized fields shall also be provided.

An atmosphere shall prevail in which healthy growth towards the Graduate Student Profile is fostered, and aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

With the exception of approved magnet education (alternative) programs, the District requires schools to seek and maintain authorization from the International Baccalaureate (IB) organization, and commits to aligning instructional programs and practices with expectations consistent with IB.

The various instructional programs shall be developed to maintain a standards-based guaranteed and viable curriculum across all grade-levels and in all subject areas as determined by District building goals and alignment to IB.

It is through a joint partnership of staff, students, parents/guardians, and community stakeholders we ensure students meet the core academic expectations and develop in the aspects of the graduate student profile.

Preschool program

At the preschool level, schools will provide and differentiate yearly instruction and assessment in Board approved standards and essential skills.  Preschools with IB authorization will provide instruction through the IB Primary Years Program framework.

At the elementary school level, schools will provide and differentiate instruction and assessment of the Board approved standards and essential skills. Elementary schools with IB authorization will provide instruction through the IB Primary Years Program framework.

Middle school program (Grades 6-8)

At the middle school level, schools will continue to provide and differentiate instruction and assessment in Board approved standards and essential skills. Middle schools with IB authorization will provide instruction through the IB Middle Years Program framework.  Students will also have the opportunity to expand their talents and interests through an exploratory/electives program that provides instruction in content standards.

High school program (Grades 9-12)

At the high school level, schools will balance core academic expectations for all students in the achievement of content standards while serving the diverse talents and interests of our students.  High schools with IB authorization will provide instruction in grades 9-10 through the IB Middle Years Program framework, and students will have the option to participate in the IB Diploma Program in grades 11-12.

High school will provide students with the academic skills to pursue further education and to be a productive member of the workforce.   Students will also develop and demonstrate skills essential for success in postsecondary life.  Summit graduates will have the necessary attributes, skills, and knowledge (Colorado Academic Standards) that can be applied in an interdependent, interdisciplinary way, and leveraged in a variety of situations both locally and globally.

Magnet School Program (Grades 7-12)

The district's magnet school program provides the community with a small school option focused on personalized, transformational education.  Through relationship-based education, the magnet program creates a learning environment that cultivates character, motivation, and integrity while preparing students for academic success.  The program utilizes blended learning structures focusing on academics, character, community, and nature.
