File: JICHA - Possession and or Use of Tobacco by StudentsIn order to promote the general health, welfare and well being of staff and students, smoking, chewing or other use of any tobacco products by students shall be banned from all school property.
For the purpose of this policy, the following definitions shall apply:
1. "School property" shall mean all property owned, leased, rented or otherwise used by a school including but not limited to the following
a. All interior portions of any building or other structure used for instruction, administration, and support services. The term shall not apply to buildings used primarily as residences, i.e. teacherages or rental houses.
b. All school grounds over which the school exercises control including areas surrounding any buildings, playgrounds, athletic fields, recreation areas and parking areas.
c. All vehicles used by district for transporting students, staff, visitors or other persons.
2. "Tobacco" shall include cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, snuff, chewing tobacco and all other kinds and forms of tobacco prepared in such manner as to be suitable for chewing, smoking or both. "Tobacco shall include cloves or any other product packaged for smoking.
3. "Use" shall mean lighting, chewing, inhaling or smoking any tobacco product.
Enforcement of this policy shall be referred to policy JICH-R.
Signs shall be posted in prominent places on all school property to notify the public that smoking or other use of tobacco products is prohibited in accordance with state law and Board policy.
