The Board recognizes the value of first-hand experiences provided through travel. These are a most effective and worthwhile means of learning. Purposeful, well-organized and properly supervised travel experiences enable students to discover new worlds, stimulate interest in further learning, increase cultural awareness, bring historical events to life, provide first-hand experiences with scientific and environmental topics, develop self-assurance, enhance language skills, and solidify an appreciation of the American way of life.
It is the Board's desire to encourage student travel as part of a school-related class, club or program that has an ongoing affiliation with the school. The purpose of specific guidelines and appropriate administrative procedures is to screen, approve and evaluate student activity trips to ensure that all reasonable steps are taken for the safety of the participants and that such trips provide the highest educational value possible. Participation is a privilege for those who meet all eligibility standards prior to travel. Any failure to sustain eligibility will result in loss of this privilege, which may incur loss of financial deposits with commercial touring companies.
These guidelines and procedures shall ensure that all student activity trips have the approval of the principal and that trips of more than three consecutive school days have the approval of the superintendent no less than three months prior to travel.
