File:  GC - Professional Staff

Note:  Policies and regulations in the GC section (Professional Staff) pertain only to instructional and administrative staff members.

Teachers shall be in one of four classifications according to the terms of their employment:

1.  Non-probationary teacher.  A non-probationary teacher is a licensed teacher who is employed to instruct, direct or supervise an instructional program and who has completed three full years of continuous employment in the District and who has been re-employed for the fourth year.  The term "teacher" includes all non-administrative certificated personnel employed by the District in an instructional position or serving as a professional specialist (e.g. counselors, psychologists, media specialists) not including support staff and substitutes.  A non-probationary teacher does not include persons holding letters of authorization or the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent.

2.  Probationary teacher.  A teacher employed on a full time continuous basis who has not completed three full years of continuous employment in the District as a teacher and who has not been re-employed for a fourth year.

3.  Substitute teacher.  A teacher who is employed in place of a regular employee and whose work is intermittent and in no case continuous for more than 89 consecutive school days or one semester during a school year, or a teacher who works on two or more replacement assignments for a total of less than 120 days during an academic year.

4.  Part-time teacher.  A teacher who normally works less than four hours per regular school day.

Administration.  Administrators are licensed personnel including, principals, assistant principals, and other personnel who have administrative contracts with the District.  This classification does not include the Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent.  Any administrator who moves from the status of non-probationary teacher in the District to an administrative contract shall maintain non-probationary rights to a teaching position.  There are no non-probationary administrative rights.

The Board shall approve all classifications upon the recommendation of the superintendent.
