IHBG - Home SchoolingThe district acknowledges the right of a parent/guardian to home school a child of school age in accordance with the requirements of C.R.S. 22-33-104.5, as that statute may be amended from time to time, and acknowledges that students enrolled in a nonpublic home-based educational program pursuant to the said statute are exempt from compliance with the compulsory school attendance laws. Parents/guardians of home-schooled students are responsible for knowledge of, and compliance with, applicable laws.
Dual enrollment
Students participating in a home-based educational program shall not be permitted to attend classes within the district unless the student is enrolled in at least 90 hours of teacher-pupil instruction and teacher-pupil contact in the semester of the official count date or the alternative count date established by state law or such other minimum number of hours established to qualify for part-time pupil funding under state law.
Extracurricular activities
Subject to the same eligibility requirements as apply to students in the district, the district shall allow any student enrolled in a home-based education program to participate on an equal basis in any activity offered by the district, to the extent required by law, recognizing that there are differences in legal requirements depending upon whether the student does or does not reside within the district's boundaries. With regard to athletic teams, debate teams and/or other activities in which the number of participants is limited, the home-schooled athlete may compete for a position on the team or activity group on the same basis as student enrolled in the district. In determining weekly academic eligibility of home-schooled students, the athletic director of the school shall verify that the courses and grades submitted by the student are consistent with district requirements and district academic standards. The district shall require submission of the student's work or other proof of academic performance in determining weekly eligibility.
Participation in interscholastic activities as a part of a school's educational program is a privilege and not a right. Students wishing to participate are required to meet standards of personal behavior and academic performance which are rationally related to school purposes. In this regard, the CHSAA and its member schools may exercise the fullest discretion under law.
Athletic training rules and team regulations
Observance of all training rules is a year-round responsibility (summer included) and is outlined in each school's athletic handbook.
Possession and/or use of tobacco, alcoholic beverages or any controlled substance will not be tolerated. This applies to all athletes, regardless of age.
Athletes alleged to have violated this rule or any other rule in the district handbooks or in the CHSAA Handbook shall appear before a committee of head coaches and the dean/athletic director for the purpose of hearing the allegations and pleas to determine guilt or innocence. Athletes found guilty of violation of a rule may be suspended from athletic participation or their privilege of participating in athletics may be terminated. The duration of any probations and/or suspensions shall be determined by the hearing committee. Subsequent hearing meetings can be called to reconsider the duration of any disciplinary action. Appeal of these decisions may be directed to the principal, followed by the Superintendent and eventually the Board.
Note: Students/athletes who fail to appear for their hearing will automatically be suspended from participation in any sport or activity until they show cause for their conduct.
Team regulations for specific activities will be given at the beginning of each season. Violations of team regulations established by coaches of specific activities may result in abbreviated periods of suspension and/or other disciplinary actions, including dismissal from the team. If parents/guardians or the athlete desires an informal hearing concerning the dismissal, an appointment for such shall be made within 72 hours. Subsequent appeals concerning dismissal decisions should follow the same sequences outlined in the previous paragraph.
Home school credits
All students entering the district from a home-based educational program must meet the district graduation requirements. The district shall accept the transcripts from a home-based educational program provided the courses and grades earned are consistent with district requirements and the district academic standards. The district shall require submission of the student's work or other proof of academic performance for each course for which credit toward graduation is sought. In addition, the district may administer testing to the student to verify the accuracy of the student's transcripts. The district may reject any transcripts that cannot be verified through such testing. A student may not receive a district high school diploma if he/she has not been a full-time student in district schools during the entire academic year in which he/she graduates from high school.
