File:  GBGH - Sick Leave Bank

The purpose of the sick leave bank is to provide a source of sick leave for a district employee who sustains a long illness and uses up all accumulated leave or for the new employee who likewise sustains a long illness and does not have accumulated leave to use. The sick leave bank will consider all illnesses, including medical conditions related to pregnancy.

All district employees are eligible for membership in the sick leave bank. Responsibility for all operations of the sick leave bank shall be vested in the bank board. The bank board will consist of two members from each employee group:  administrators, teachers and classified staff. Members shall be chosen by their respective groups.

Employees may become members of the sick leave bank by contributing one day of leave to the bank. This shall entitle the employee to membership in the sick leave bank until such time as the bank board declares a special enrollment period in accordance with this policy. The annual enrollment period shall be the period of time within 30 days after the employee´s first work day. No employee may become a member of the sick leave bank after the enrollment period expires.

Any days remaining in the sick leave bank at the end of the school year shall be carried over to the next school year and made available for use during the subsequent school year. If the total number of days remaining in the bank drops to 75 or less days, the bank board shall declare a special enrollment period to replenish the bank. Upon such declaration, each participating employee shall contribute one sick leave day in order to maintain membership in the bank.

Any person applying for sick leave bank benefits must have used all of his or her own leave before drawing from the bank. An individual may draw a maximum of 15 school days each year from the bank. Persons withdrawing sick leave days from the bank shall not be required to replace them.

Applications for sick leave bank benefits must be made to the bank board in writing. Sick leave bank benefits are restricted to illness of members or their immediate family (as defined in policy GBGG, Staff Sick Leave).

Should a dispute arise or should the number of days requested exceed the number of days remaining in the sick leave bank, the bank board shall render a decision. Decisions of the sick leave bank board may be subject to appeal. The appeal shall be made to an ad hoc committee of four persons selected by the presidents of the CEA and the ESP and the superintendent.
