File:  BDF - Advisory Committees

Summit School District RE-1 (the “District”) encourages the participation of citizens of the District in decision making processes. However, the legal responsibility for decision making in all matters of policy and operation rests with the Board of Education (“Board”) and/or the Superintendent as defined in Board Policy.

1.  Board-Appointed Advisory Committees (“Board Committees”) are addressed in, and shall adhere to, the Board’s Governance Process Policy 11, Board Committees (GP-11). Membership is approved by the Board and vacancies will be addressed as outlined in Board Policy GP-11. These committees may include those committees outlined in Section 2 below.

2.  School and District Level Advisory Committees Required under Federal and State Programs shall be formed and shall function in accordance with the requirements pertaining to each specific Federal or State program. Committees of this type that are established under the authority of the Superintendent and/or whose members are selected by the Superintendent are not considered Board Committees. These committees possess the advisory responsibilities relevant to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of such program or project as required by law. Membership and vacancies shall adhere to the specific Federal or State program.

3.  Community groups that are not included in Sections 1 and 2 above are encouraged to offer suggestions and advice to the District in order to assist in decision making processes. Membership/participation may be coordinated by the District.

The final responsibility for all decisions rests with the Board and/or Superintendent as defined in Board Policy.

If required by state law, advisory committee meetings shall be open to the public and related meeting notices shall be posted in the same place and manner as notices of Board meetings.
